I am. At heart. A troubleshooter. A problem solver. The more complicated the problem, the better I like it. It was my primary purpose in this reality for the first two decades of my adult life. When I began photographing; I began to see photography as a puzzle that is waiting for me to find the solution.
I looked at the world and mentally practiced how I would photograph what I saw. Training my eye and my mind to think of the world in shutter speeds, and F/stops. To look how the light is falling across the building across the street, or how the LED streetlights cast hard lined repetitive shadows. As this continued, I did the same to people I saw and met. How would I photograph them? Where? Lighting? Wardrobe? Story? Story.
At first that hung me up. Why did I need a story? Isn’t the beautiful image enough? No. It isn’t. I realized I needed to show the story. It was like a door unlocked in my creative mind. Story added a third dimension to the puzzle. Now I make up stories for everything and everyone I encounter, all the time. And I am continually attempting to visually tell the story I see in my head. I hope that you enjoy the small escape that my stories provide.
I retired from the US Navy in 2018 and spent the next five years earning my BFA and MA in Photography from the Academy of Art University. During my time in the Navy, I served on served on five ships and six deployments. I served with many amazing people that I will never forget. I am married to the most wonderful woman I have ever met. She is a constant source of inspiration and support.
